Hey there! Made a little blog to keep track of progress on a 20-30 second short film I'm producing as part of my 2D Character Animation class at Columbus College of Art & Design.
I spent some time exploring a possible story for the film and settled on a story of how Lucas created, his imaginary friend Winston, a furry and energetic creature.
I knew I definitely wanted to create a sense of rigidness and energy with Winston and was able to come up with the idea of having him drawn in a rough, crayon texture. Being that he's an imaginary character, my initial thoughts were to draw him with big, blank eyes. I eventually realized that he was more appealing and felt more "real" (as real as an imaginary friend can be) if he had small, glowing eyes wedged between the large teeth in his crooked smile. I also decided that Winston would grow alongside Lucas and so I created him to be similar in proportion.
Lucas was an easier character design, as I partly based him off my 8 year old self: messy, curly hair with a playful expression.
Below are some of the early sketches I did in creating Winston where I was exploring use of shape along with different features.
I'm definitely still working out the story for this very short film, but I'm excited for the next few months as this thing comes together! More updates coming soon...
